Every week in the coachingMBA, we ask a simple question. But it’s a question that, if asked regularly, will help you make more progress, get more clients, and hone your instincts as a coaching professional more than almost anything else can.
I call this the ONE ACTION question.
Here it is:
What is the ONE action, which, if it were the only thing you did this week, would move your business forward more than anything else?
What’s amazing to me is, most people almost never ask themselves this question. Instead, they ask questions like, what should I be doing right now? How can I get a client? Am I any good at coaching, or should I quit?
Of course, these are fine questions, and can even provide some useful insight in many ways. But where they’re not really helpful is in actually getting you into action. They don’t kick you into gear, or motivate you in the same way. The reason why I love the ONE ACTION question is because it’s all about actually getting into action.
But, I know what you’re thinking: Toku, that’s the problem! I don’t know what one action would move my business forward!
But I’m here to let you know that’s okay. The beauty of this question is that you can get it wrong. Some weeks, I think the best action for me at that moment is to write an email to some prospects. I send the email, and I get no answers.
It’s easy to feel discouraged by this. But here’s the thing: that’s data. This is useful to me. It tells me, that action did NOT move my business forward. And what’s great about this process is that I get to simply ask the question again.
By asking this question, answering it, and taking action, I learn something new every week.
I take action.
I learn.
NO shortcuts.
NO hacks.
Just action and learning.
It’s not sexy. But it fucking works.
So try it.
Ask the question.
Be brave when you answer.
Get into action.
And see what happens.
